What we see on site
There is almost always a backup: an external drive next to the server, permanently plugged in. It protects against neither theft, fire nor ransomware, which encrypts the backup along with the data. And in most companies, nobody has ever tested a full restore.

Frequently asked questions
Is an external drive enough as a backup?
No. A permanently connected drive gets encrypted by ransomware along with your data, and disappears with the server in a theft or fire. You need at least one off-site copy and one immutable or offline copy (the 3-2-1-1-0 rule).
How do I know my backup really works?
The only proof is a successful restore. We test restores at commissioning and then at regular intervals, and give you a report. An untested backup does not exist.
Do you back up Microsoft 365 data?
Yes: email, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams. Microsoft keeps the service available, but data deleted by mistake does not stay recoverable there forever.
What is a disaster recovery plan?
It is the document that says, before the incident, what to restart, in what order, who does what and with which backups. It turns a crisis lasting weeks into a recovery lasting hours.
